Biodiv-Wind is preparing to deploy a Bird Sentinel in the Nord department as part of a new study on a wind farm! This advanced version will feature an altitude radar, allowing for a more detailed analysis of flight trajectories and bird activity near wind turbines. By improving bird detection, this study aims to enhance our understanding of how birds interact with wind farms in key migration areas.

A Strategic Region for Wind Energy and Biodiversity

The Nord region plays a crucial role in both renewable energy production and biodiversity conservation. As part of Hauts-de-France, the region currently leads wind energy production in France, generating 14,500 GWh in 2023—almost 30% of the country’s total wind power output (49 TWh).

At the same time, the area is an important bird migration corridor, making it essential to study how different species navigate wind farms. With our bird monitoring system, we aim to collect valuable data on bird behavior, contributing to a better understanding of the interactions between wind turbines and flying wildlife.

Cutting-Edge Bird Monitoring Technologies

For this study, Biodiv-Wind will deploy multiple technologies to capture detailed flight data, including:

✔️ Altitude radar for high-precision flight tracking
✔️ Daytime and nighttime video monitoring
✔️ Automated data collection for real-time insights

These tools will provide a comprehensive dataset to support research on bird movements and wind farm interactions. The results will help refine future approaches to bird monitoring and contribute to ongoing research in the field.

A Commitment to Scientific Research

This project aligns with Biodiv-Wind’s mission to support scientific studies through bird detection technologies and data-driven insights. While this deployment does not include bird deterrent systems or collision prevention measures, it is a crucial step in improving our understanding of how wind farms coexist with biodiversity.

We are grateful to our partners for their trust in this research initiative. Their support enables us to further bird monitoring research, leveraging bird AI, radar bird detection, and other innovative tools to expand knowledge in this field.

🔬 As the study progresses, we look forward to sharing key findings that contribute to a more informed approach to wind energy and biodiversity conservation.
